Ismay Spooner (née Hinckson; 27 December 1900 – 8 January 2013) was a Barbadian-born Guyanese supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her death, she may have been the oldest known living person in Guyana.
Biography[]
Spooner claimed to have been born in Barbados (then British colony) on 27 December 1900 to Bajan parents. Her father, Livingston, died before she was born, but her mother Louise, died at the age of 102. She had two brothers and two sisters, all deceased as of 2011. At the age of 10, she moved to British Guiana with her mother and uncles.
She married Harold Spooner, a cane-harvester in British Guiana. She said that some of her family members returned to Barbados but she refused since she could not handle “the running up and down”. She settled on the Corentyne where she lived until her passing. There she worked in the cane fields. She lived on her own until 2002, when she moved to Iris February.
She became the oldest known living person in Guyana, following the death of 113-year-old Matilda Lewis on 30 June 2009.
On her claimed 111th birthday in 2011, she was visited by the President of the Humanitarian Mission of New Jersey Arya Samaj, Pandit Suresh Sugrim and his family. Her only child, Elsie, died in Scotland several years prior to 2013. She used to eat hassar and gilbacker, but stopped shortly after becoming a Seventh–day Adventist a few years prior to her 110th birthday in 2010.
Spooner died in Skeldon, Corriverton, East Berbice-Corentyne, Guyana, on 8 January 2013 at the claimed age of 112 years, 12 days.
