Issaku Tomoe [Japanese: 巴一作] (15 August 1909 – 14 April 2020) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Tomoe was born in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, Japan on 15 August 1909. He aspired to become a physician, and Nagoya Medical College awarded him the title of Doctor of Medicine for his thesis entitled "Pernicious Anemia in Japan" in 1939.

In 1968, he was appointed as the director of the Municipal Okazaki Hospital. He remained an active physician well past his 90th birthday. Tomoe had two daughters. He was driving until he was 99. At some point, he moved into the nursing home in Okazaki.

He celebrated his 110th birthday in August 2019. At the age of 110, he was wheelchair-bound, but still enjoyed watching television and reading newspapers. He had five grandchildren.

In September 2019, he was reported as the oldest living man in Aichi Prefecture, Japan. He became the oldest living person in Aichi Prefecture following the death of Jou Makihara on 12 February 2020. Tomoe became the oldest living man in Japan following the death of Chitetsu Watanabe on 23 February 2020.

Tomoe died of natural causes in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture, Japan on 14 April 2020 at the age of 110 years, 243 days.

His age was verified by MHLW Japan, as well as Ayuta Tonomura, and (posthumously) validated by the GRG on 31 July 2021.
