Istvanne Ladi (née Zsuzsanna Madarasi) [Hungarian: Ládi Istvánné Madarasi Zsuzsanna] (21 March 1884 – 5 February 1993) was a Hungarian centenarian. At the time of her death, she was to oldest living person in the country and also the oldest documented person to ever live in Hungary. Her age record was surpassed by Jozsefne Szucs in 1999.

Biography

Zsuzsanna was born on 21 March 1884 (although she claimed 20 March), in Jászkisér, Austria-Hungary (present-day Hungary), into a family of peasants.

Zsuzsanna finished primary education at age 12, which was the most common age to leave school at that time. She lived the happy life of rural girls, and really liked to dance at village festivals. She first met her future husband, István Ládi, at one of her friend’s wedding. They got married in 1903, and later had one daughter and two sons. The boys died in their youth, whereas the daughter, Klára, remained unmarried. István worked as a smith and was very well-known in the area. Zsuzsanna did the household chores and worked on the fields.

After her husband died in 1965, Zsuzsanna lived with her daughter (who was 86 at the time of her mother’s death). Despite her poor eyesight, she was in good health as a centenarian, and she would work in her garden even at the age of 107.

Zsuzsanna became the oldest living person in Hungary upon Sandorne Sarkozi’s death in February 1991. On her 108th birthday in 1992, she received letters from the President and the Prime Minister of Hungary, and a clip about the celebration was shown in the national TV news. She died on 5 February 1993, in Jászkisér, at the age of 108 years, 321 days.
