Henricus Petrus Jacobus "Jaak" Broekx (6 August 1914 – 31 October 2023) was a Belgian centenarian who was the oldest known living man in Belgium at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Henricus Petrus Jacobus Broekx was born in Bree, Limburg, Belgium on 6 August 1914. He had 10 siblings. He never married nor had children. After the death of his father in 1984, he lived in his farm with his mother and his sister Christine. Broekx worked as a farmer his entire life, until he reached the age of 100.
He lived with his sister Christine Broekx until her death on 14 March 2015 at the age of 97.
In October 2016, then aged 102, he was reported as the oldest known living person in Bree, Limburg. He lived alone in his farm until 2020, when he moved to the nursing home Welzijnscampus Gerkenberg.
On 16 January 2021, at the age of 106, he received the COVID-19 vaccine, making him one of the oldest known people to receive the vaccine.
He turned 107 years old on 6 August 2021. At the time, his cousin Pierre Van Hoef and his nephew and godchild Jaak Tielens were living.
He became the oldest known living man in Belgium, following the death of 107-year-old Jef Smets on 9 September 2021. At the time, he was said to be "very content with the little things in life".
Jaak Broekx died in Welzijnscampus Gerkenberg in Bree, Limburg, Belgium on 31 October 2023 at the age of 109 years, 86 days. At the time of his death, he was the oldest living person in Limburg, the oldest living man in Belgium and the second-oldest living person in Belgium, behind Fernande Courtoy. He is also the oldest man ever from the region of Limburg.
