Jacob Washington Currence (2 November 1898 – 17 October 2008) was an American centenarian who is currently the 2nd oldest known man ever from West Virginia behind Frank Buckles, who was also his successor as oldest living man in West Virginia.

Biography[]

Jacob Currence was born in Hemlock, Upshur County, West Virginia, USA on 2 November 1898. His parents were Peter Currence and Lydia Ann (née Light) Currence. He had nine siblings.

He married Almira Pomp in Buckhannon, West Virginia, USA on 15 October 1921. The couple had 12 children: Carrol Currence (1922–2014), Marvin Currence (born 1927), Zella Pastine (born 1929), Jimmie Currence (1932–1992), Loren Currence (1934–1987), Orvil Buddy "O.B." Currence (born 1936), Eleanor Demotto (born 1938), Clyde Currence, Macel Tenny, Zella Pastine, Deloris Shank and Mary Hall.

Currence was employed as a woodsman, farmer and railroader, and worked for Peerless Coal Co. prior to his retirement. He got widowed in 1975.

He was a member of the Cassity United Methodist Church and served as a local Methodist minister for several years.

He outlived three sons — Junior, Jimmie and Loren Currence — and five grandchildren.

Currence died in Elkins, West Virginia, USA on 17 October 2008 at the age of 109 years, 350 days. He was survived by four sons, five daughters, one brother Oran Currence, 28 grandchildren, 62 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.
