James William Hull (23 April 1852 – 8 September 1961) was a British-born Australian centenarian who was the oldest man ever to die in Australia until his age was surpassed in 2000 by Jack Lockett.

Biography[]

Hull was born in London, United Kingdom, on 23 April 1852 as the third of 11 children born to oilman James Prior Hull and Jemima M. (née Forster) Hull. His parents had recently returned to England from Australia, but emigrated back to Australia permanently in 1856, briefly living in Wellington and Orange (both in New South Wales) before settling in Molong.

Hull married Annie Frances Parslow, and the couple had eight children before Hull was widowed on 30 July 1937. His mother and father had died in 1902 and 1906 respectively. He became the oldest man to reside in Australia after surpassing 108-year-old Edward Bennett in 1960.

Hull died on 8 September 1961 at the age of 109 years, 138 days. He was the oldest known person to die in New South Wales and the second-oldest known person ever to have died in Australia after UK-born Mary Crowe (1836-1945) of Tasmania.
