James Wilson Smith (10 July 1842 - 27 March 1951) was an American centenarian and civil war veteran and a candidate for the oldest living man in the world at the time of his death.
James Wilson Smith was born in Buchanan County, Missouri, USA on 10 July 1842. He served 90 days in the summer of 1864 in an independent forty-man cavalry unit that patrolled the Columbia River Gorge. The unit was officially Olney's Detachment of Oregon Cavalry but they were poorly trained, undisciplined and not respected by the regulars with whom they served. The regulars called them "Olney's Forty Thieves."
Smith worked till age 90 and lived on his own until age 104 and at 105 he was still able to read the newspapers without glasses and listen to the radio.
Smith died on March 27 1951 in Lebanon, Linn County, Oregon, USA at the age of 108 years, 260 days.
