Jan Nijenhuis (20 October 1873 – 2 May 1982) was a Dutch centenarian who was the oldest living man in the Netherlands and Europe (excluding the case of Andrei Kuznetsoff) at the time of his death.
Biography
Jan Nijenhuis was born in Hoogeveen, Drenthe, Netherlands on 20 October 1873. He worked as a ship carpenter. He never married and lived his entire life in Hoogeveen. He became the oldest known living man in the Netherlands following the death of 107 year-old Gerardus Boomaerts on 23 January 1980.
Jan Nijenhuis died in Hoogeveen, Drenthe, Netherlands on 2 May 1982 at the age of 108 years, 194 days. He became bedridden during the last weeks of his life. Following his death, then-106-year-old Dirk J. van der Kooij (1875–1984) became the oldest known living man in the Netherlands.
Trivia
Nijenhuis moved to retirement home 'De Westerkim' in 1967, which is the same retirement home where Hendrikje van Andel-Schipper, the Dutch longevity recordholder and former oldest living person in Europe, lived until her death at age 115.
