Jan Nitka (22 November 1906 – 14 August 2013) was a Czech centenarian who was the oldest known living man in the Czech Republic at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Jan Nitka was born in Tršice, Olomouc Region, Austria-Hungary (now Czech Republic), on 22 November 1906, and trained as a gardener in his native Tršice. Soon after training, he went to work in fruit nurseries in Bohemia and also worked as a gardener in the archbishop's gardens in Kroměříž. After returning home, he set up a nursery for growing fruit trees and bushes, which later became known as part of the local Unified Agricultural Cooperative, where he worked as its manager. In his work, he specialized in small fruits and his extracts were sought after by many interested parties. At some point, he married, and had at least one son, Jan. He worked in gardening until he was almost 100.
On 4 August 2013, following the death of 107-year old Karel Kašpárek, he became the oldest known living man in the Czech Republic.
Jan Nitka died in Tršice, Olomouc Region, Czech Republic, on 14 August 2013, at the age of 106 years, 265 days. Following his death, then 105-year-old Stanislav Spáčil became the oldest known living man in the Czech Republic.
