Biography[]
Christy was born in North Carolina, USA on 20 August 1904. Her family landed in Emory because her father’s health forced them to move to Virginia. They initially lived in an Emory boarding house run by her aunt, but soon moved into a home on Hillman Highway where her father ran a printing business. She attended E&H while living in the family home, graduated in 1928, and soon embarked on her teaching career – first in King, North Carolina, then at Glade Spring High School. In the late 1930s, her family returned to Andrews where she taught for the rest of her career.
On her 105th birthday in 2009, the whole town gathered to celebrate and a reporter asked what her secret was for longevity. Her answer was succinct: “Never get married. Never have children. Never go to the doctor.”
Christy died in North Carolina, USA, on 28 May 2016 at the age of 111 years, 282 days.
