Jelisaveta Veljkovic (Serbian: Јелисавета Вељковић] (née Vicenca Kufner; 18 July 1904 – 20 October 2016) was a Croatian-born Serbian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She is the oldest known person who ever died in Serbia and the oldest person who was born in the territory of present-day Croatia.

Biography[]

Jelisaveta Veljkovic was born as Vicenca Kufner in Ravna Gora, Primorje-Gorski Kotar, Austria-Hungary, (now Croatia) on 18 July 1904. She was the second of seven children born into an Italian-Austrian family to father Emerik Kufner and mother Antonija Leš. She finished five grades of elementary school.

In 1920, at the age of 16, she moved to Belgrade (present-day capital of Serbia, then Kingdom of Yugoslavia) with a friends. In Belgrade, she met her future husband, Stanislav Veljković, who was a decorator of the National Theater, who lived next door. They got married when she was 20, and the couple had 12 children. Following her marriage, she changed her first name to Jelisaveta (a Serbian name) and converted into an Orthodox Christian.

Her husband died in 1983. At the age of 90, she had a cataract surgery. One of her aunts lived to be 103, and one uncle to 104.

On 31 October 2010, following the death of 108-year-old Mileva Grbic, she became the oldest known living woman in Serbia.

On 15 April 2011, following the death of 109-year-old Jovo Latinovic, she became the oldest known living person in Serbia.

On 2 January 2014, at the age of 109 years, 168 days, she surpassed the final age of Kostadina Simbo (1894–2004) of 109 years, 167 days, becoming the oldest known woman ever in Serbia.

On 15 March 2014, at the age of 109 years, 240 days, she surpassed the final age of Jovo Latinovic (1901–2011) of 109 years, 239 days, becoming the oldest known person ever in Serbia.

On 26 May 2014, following the death of 110-year-old Karamfila Stoyanova of Bulgaria, she became the oldest known living person in the Balkans.

On 18 July 2014, she celebrated her 110th birthday, becoming the first known person ever recorded in Serbia who turned 110, and later the first person from Croatia and Serbia who turned 111 and 112 years. At the age of 112, she had seven living children, 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and one great-great-granddaughter.

Jelisaveta Veljkovic died in Senjak, Savski Venac, Belgrade, Serbia, on 20 October 2016, at the age of 112 years, 94 days. Following her death, then 107-year-old Mara Radenkovic became the oldest known living person in Serbia, and then 110-year-old Eugenia Vranti of Greece, became the oldest known living person in the Balkans.

Her age was verified by GRG-Serbia Correspondent Dejan Vujic, and (posthumously) validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) on 7 October 2023.
