Jemima "Mima" Gray (née Inkster; 3 October 1901 – 8 December 2010) was a British-Australian centenarian who is potentially the oldest person ever born in the Shetland Islands, and the only one to reach the age of 109.
Biography[]
Jemima Gray was born Jemima Inkster in Muness, Shetland Islands, Scotland, on 3 October 1901 to parents Matthew Fordyce Inkster and Catherine Elizabeth (née Mackay) Inkster. She had a brother: Willie. She was 14 years old when she left Muness for the first time.
Jemima married Gilbert "Bertie" Gray in January 1924, and after he was offered a job in the South Australian Fire Brigade, the couple emigrated to South Australia in 1928. Her parents, Matthew and Catherine, died in 1944 and 1952 aged 77 and 84 respectively. Gilbert died on 14 August 1970, aged 78, after 46 years of marriage.
Gray moved into a nursing home at the age of 104. On her 105th birthday in 2006, she claimed her secret to a long life was, “having a good diet when a youngster and not having any preservatives, except salt, and lots of fresh vegetables and fish.”
Gray died in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia on 8 December 2010 at the age of 109 years, 66 days. At the time of her death, she was the fifth-oldest known living person in Australia, behind Miriam Schmierer, Claude Choules, Mary Rothstein, and Eva McConnell.
