Joaquim Varela (born 13 May 1915) is a Portuguese centenarian who is currently the oldest known living man in Portugal.

Biography[]

Joaquim Varela was born on 13 May 1915 (but was registered on 1 June 1915) in Ourique, Beja District, Portugal. His parents were Amadeu Guerreiro and Maria Antonia.

Varela married Augusta Parreira (1915–1993) in 1940, in Odemira, Beja District, Portugal. The couple had 6 children. His wife died at age 77. After the death of his wife, he moved to his daughter´s house, in Sao Bras de Alportel, Faro District, Portugal.

On his 105th birthday in 2020, Varela has nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He became the oldest known living man in Portugal, following the death of 108-year-old Manuel Ferreira of Lisbon on 21 September 2022.

Joaquim Varela currently lives in Sao Bras de Alportel, Faro District, Portugal at the age of 109 years, 180 days.
