Joaquim Varela (born 1 June 1915) is a Portuguese supercentenarian who is currently the oldest known living man in Portugal. His age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Joaquim Varela was born on 1 June 1915 as registered (claims 13 May) in Ourique, Beja District, Portugal. His parents were Amadeu Guerreiro and Maria Antonia.

Varela married Augusta Parreira (1915–1993) in 1940, in Odemira, Beja District, Portugal. The couple had 6 children. His wife died at age 77. After the death of his wife, he moved to his daughter´s house, in Sao Bras de Alportel, Faro District, Portugal.

On his 105th birthday in 2020, Varela has nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He became the oldest known living man in Portugal, following the death of 108-year-old Manuel Ferreira of Lisbon on 21 September 2022.

In June 2025, he celebrated his 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.

Joaquim Varela currently lives in Sao Bras de Alportel, Faro District, Portugal at the age of 110 years, 185 days (claims 110 years, 204 days).
