Johannes Olafur "Joe" Markusson (25 August 1901 – 14 March 2009) was a Canadian centenarian who was the oldest living man in Canada at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Markusson was born in Arnes, Manitoba on 25 August 1901. His parents were Gudmundur and Ingibjorg Markusson. He had Icelandic ancestry. He worked as a farmer and a fisherman. He married his wife, Emilia, in 1927, and had 3 children. At the time of his death, he had 12 grandchildren (one deceased), 22 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Markusson became the oldest living man in Canada following the death of Leon Robitaille on 22 August 2008. He died in Gimli (famous from having the largest population of Icelandic people apart from Iceland), Manitoba, Canada on 14 March 2009 at the age of 107 years, 201 days. His successor as Canada's oldest man was David Wiener.
