Biography[]

Jonathan Richter was born in Nova Rudnia, Russian Empire (now Ukraine) on 6 September 1888. He worked for 30 years as a farmer on his own farm, and later in a collective farm. He moved to Germany in 1994 at the age of 106.

He became the oldest known living man in Germany, following the death of 109-year-old Wilhelm Lehnen on 18 May 1998.

As of September 1998, Richter lived with 76-year-old daughter-in-law, and an 18-year-old great-grandson.

On his 110th birthday in 1998, the President Roman Herzog gived him the 250 mark monetary gift that is customary for over 100-year-olds, and a picture with a dedication and his own signature.

Richter was never seriously ill, but he had age-related hearing loss.

Richter died in Zweibrucken, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany on 12 October 1998 at the age of 110 years, 36 days. Following his death, then-109-year-old Wilhelm Schorner became the oldest known living man in Germany.
