Centenarian |
Jorgen "Juulut" Ole Markus Rasmus Kleemann [Greenlandic: Jørgen] (7 March 1923 – 11 May 2023) was a Greenlander centenarian and musician who was the oldest known living person in Greenland at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Jorgen Kleemann was born in Aappilattoq, Kujalleq, Greenland on 7 March 1923, the son of Hans Wilhelm Anthon Kleemann (1879–?), the administrator of Udsted, and his wife Maren Dorthe Sofie Katrine Frederiksen (1881–?). His grandfather was German. Jorgen grew up in Upernavik Kujalleq and lived most of his life in Upernavik. He worked as a baker, later as a port warehouse worker, and from 1987 as a catechist. He also served as a church leader for twenty years. In 2005, he moved to Nuuk.
In the 1980s, he began releasing songs with the Ulo record company, which he recorded with his family. Some of these were his own compositions, but some were also traditional pieces, which he recorded for the first time on sound carriers. Between 1984 and 1991, he released four records, each with around a dozen songs. It was mainly folk and dance music, which he presented at public holidays, family celebrations, or international festivals in Greenland, Denmark, and Canada. His preferred instrument is the accordion.
On 18 July 2001, he received the Nersornaat in silver. In addition, he was awarded the Greenlandic Culture Prize in 2014.
Kleemann had been the oldest known living person in Greenland from the death of Anton Geisler on 28 February 2021, until his own death two years later. He celebrated his 100th birthday on 7 March 2023, becoming the second Greenlander man on record to become a centenarian.
Jorgen Kleemann died from old age in Nuuk, Sermersooq, Greenland on 11 May 2023 at the age of 100 years, 65 days.
