Josef Flandera (21 June 1902 – 6 March 2010) was a Ukrainian-born Czech centenarian who was the oldest known living person in the Czech Republic at the time of his death. He is currently the oldest known man ever to have lived in the Czech Republic.
Biography[]
Josef Flandera was born in Volyn Oblast, Russian Empire (now Ukraine), on 21 June 1902. During World War II, he served in the Czechoslovak army on the Eastern Front. After the war, he received five decorations from then president of Czechoslovakia Ludvík Svoboda. In 1947, he settled in Habartice, Šumperk District, Olomouc Region, where he worked in agriculture. At some point, he married his wife Anna Flanderová (1915–1993) and they had children.
On 4 May 2007, following the death of 106-year-old Stanislav Večeřa, he became the oldest known living man in the Czech Republic.
On 30 December 2008, following the death of 108-year-old Marta Pokorná, he became the oldest known living person in the Czech Republic.
On 18 October 2009, at the age of 107 years, 119 days, he surpassed the final age of Alois Vocásek (1896–2003) of 107 years, 118 days, becoming the oldest known man ever to have lived in the Czech Republic.
Josef Flandera died in Hněvotín, Olomouc Region, Czech Republic, on 6 March 2010, at the age of 107 years, 258 days. Following his death, then 106-year-old Juliana Vašíčková became the oldest known living person in the Czech Republic, and then 105-year-old Gabriel Miksa became the oldest known living man in the Czech Republic.
