Elena Josefina Lombana de Vargas (née Lombana Taborda; 21 December 1910 – 16 October 2020) was a Colombian-born American centenarian and writer.
Biography[]
Josefina Lombana de Vargas was born in Cartagena, Bolivar, Colombia on 21 December 1910. Her parents were Juan Lombana and Ambrosia Taborda. She was baptized on 8 January 1911. She had 13 siblings.
She studied pedagogy at the Colegio Mayor de Bolivar, with a laureate degree thesis that allowed her to win a scholarship for a specialization in pre-school education in Bogota.
She married Captain Carlos Vargas Gaviria and the couple had three children: Rosario Vargas Yanacopulos, Maria Vargas and Carlos Enrique (now deceased). She moved to Chicago, Illinois, USA on 3 November 1973. She got widowed in 2003.
She worked as a writer and was the author of texts schoolchildren, a collection of poems and an autobiography entitled "Facetas de mi Vida".
In December 2019, she celebrated her 109th birthday with the consulate officials in Chicago.
Lombana de Vargas died in Chicago, Illinois, USA on 16 October 2020 at the age of 109 years, 300 days.
