Josephina Maria da Conceicao (Portuguese: Conceição; 25 September 1910 – 8 January 2023) was a Brazilian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Josephina Maria da Conceicao was born in Sapucaia, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on 25 September 1910 (claimed 1909). At the age of 15, she married Jorge Edmundo Souza, who was two years older. She lived most of her life in Cavalcanti, Rio de Janeiro, but lived for 30 years in Nova Iguacu. During her life, she worked in a fields. She never worked outside the home, neither went to school, which didn't prevent her from taking care of the home economics. Her husband died at the age of 58. They had 11 children (six alive as of 2019). Her sister, Clotilde, died at the age of 97.

In September 2019, she celebrated her claimed 110th birthday, surrounded by family and friends. At that time, she had 21 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, 25 great-great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-great-grandchildren. According to her granddaughter, Leila Cristina de Souza, she has no diabetes, no glaucoma, no shivering... She is only in a wheelchair because when she turned 100, she started falling and the doctor thought it's safer to do so... Her granddaughter claimed that she is two years older, but her birth certificate states she was born in 1909.

Josephina Maria da Conceicao died in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 8 January 2023 at the age of 112 years (claimed 113), 105 days. At the time of her death, she was one of the oldest known (documented) living people in Brazil.
