Joyce Wooding (6 September 1911 – 9 January 2022) was a British supercentenarian who is one of oldest known survivors of COVID-19, having recovered from the disease at the age of 108. Her age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Mary Joyce Wooding was born into a farming family on 6 September 1911 in Staverton, Northamptonshire, England. She had two brothers and one sister. She trained as a Norland Nanny in London, and worked as such for a number of years.
After Wooding met her husband, Leslie, whom she married in 1946, the couple worked together at their overall manufacturing business in Northampton, where she ran the shop for many years. During their married life, they moved to Wootton, Northamptonshire, where they became active members of the community.
Later Life and COVID-19 Survival[]
In April 2018, Wooding moved into a care home in Northampton, Northamptonshire, England. In April 2020, at the age of 108, Wooding contracted COVID-19 during the coronavirus pandemic. She successfully recovered, making her one of the oldest known survivors of the disease. On 1 February 2021, she was one of a number of centenarians who sent well-wishes to fundraiser Captain Sir Tom Moore after he was hospitalised with COVID-19. Later that month, Wooding received her first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine.
Wooding died in Northampton, Northamptonshire, England, UK on 9 January 2022 at the age of 110 years, 125 days. At the time of her death, she was the oldest known living person in Northamptonshire. She is also the oldest person ever from Northamptonshire.
