Jozef Caban [Polish: Józef] (28 August 1915 – 14 March 2022) was a Polish centenarian, social activist, veteran of World War II, and the last surviving member of the pre-war National Party.

Biography[]

Jozef Caban was born in Laszew, Lodz Voivodeship, Russian Empire (now Poland) on 28 August 1915. When he started going to school, there was only one teacher.

Before the outbreak of World War II, Caban was active in the National Party (near Wielun). In 1937, he was in economic exile in the Third Reich. From March 1938, he performed his basic military service in the 78th Infantry Regiment. During the Invasion of Poland, he fought in the Battle of Mlawa and in the Siege of Warsaw, during which he was wounded in action. After the defeat in September, he was taken prisoner by the Germans, from which he escaped. He spent the German occupation in the poviat Wieluń, where he started gainful employment and was active in the Home Army. In 1945, he left for the Regained Territories, where as a military settler he settled in the Postomino Commune.

He worked as farmer. He retired in 1989. His wife died in the 1990s.

As of August 2018, he lived alone, but his son-in-law Zdzislaw Grochulski (who lived a few villages away), and his friend Lukasz Suchanowski helped him in his daily duties.

Caban died in Palowko, West Pomeranian Voivodeship, Poland, on 14 March 2022 at the age of 106 years, 198 days.
