Jozef Kowalski (Polish: Józef; 2 February 1900 – 7 December 2013)[1] was a Ukrainian-Polish supercentenarian claimant and claimed to be the second-to-last surviving veteran of the 1919–1921 Polish-Soviet War.[2] If his claimed age were true, he would have been the oldest Living man at the time of his death, since the death of Jiroemon Kimura and the last surviving man born in the 19th century. His age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography

Kowalski served in the 22nd Uhlan Regiment of the Polish Army.[3][4][5] He took part in the September Campaign in World War II, and was later held in a concentration camp. On his claimed 110th birthday, he was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta for his war service by President Lech Kaczyński, of Poland.[6] He lived in Tursk, near Sulęcin, in a care home.[3][4][5][6] On 23 February 2012 Kowalski was promoted to the rank of kapitan, and on 16 August 2012 he was nominated to become an honorary citizen of the city of Wołomin, having already become an honorary citizen of both Warsaw and Radzymin.[2][7]

Kowalski died in Tursk, Lubusz Voivodeship, Poland on 7 December 2013 at the claimed age of 113 years, 308 days.

Age Issues

Kowalski's sister was born in June 1900, making it almost impossible for Kowalski to have been born in that year.
