Jozefa Stanislawa Szyda was born on 11 March 1903 in Turek, Russian Empire (the town is presently located in Greater Poland Voivodeship). She married, however, the couple never had children. Later, she moved to Lodz where, together with her husband, they run a shop.
Reportedly, Mrs. Szyda was completely independent in daily activities until aged 108. She was cared by her niece. The family used to adress her as "Auntie Stachna". When asked about the secret of her longevity, she replied that the most important thing is to keep regular sleeping hours. On her 108th birthday, she was reported to be the oldest living person in Lodz.
