Juanita Mitchell (née Carrere; 15 December 1911 – 4 August 2023) was an American supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2023.
Biography[]
Juanita Mitchell was born in Louisiana, USA on 15 December 1911 to William and Cinderella (née Cannon) Carrere.
Mitchell moved to Chicago in 1919 at the age of 7, with her mother and her younger sister, Iona. Shortly after, she witnessed the Chicago race riot of 1919, which happened during the Red Summer. When it began, she was staying on the South Side with her uncle.
Mitchell had at least two children (including Mary Muse, who was aged 68 in December 2021). She drove until the age of 96.
In December 2021, Mitchell celebrated her 110th birthday at the Olympia Fields Country Club. She attributed her longevity to her belief in God.
In May 2023, Mitchell attended a fashion show brunch in South Loop, Chicago, along with five other centenarians.
Mitchell died from a stroke in Flossmoor, Illinois, USA on 4 August 2023 at the age of 111 years, 232 days. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest known living person in the U.S. state of Illinois, after Susie Lewis.
