Julia Adella Nutwell (née Sherbert; 30 July 1886 – 25 September 1998) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Julia Nutwell was born as a daughter of William and Julia A Sherbert in Crownsville, Anne Arundel County, Maryland, USA, on 30 July 1886. She married Alphonso Nutwell, a tenant farmer and friend of her older brothers, in 1906. The couple had eight children. She baked bread three times a day, sewed all her children's clothing and knew more about farming than some extension agents. She was out picking tobacco when she went into labor with one of her babies.
Her daughter, Elizabeth Catterton, attributed her mother's longevity to her ability to "be calm in adversity and taking life's ups and downs equally". According to her family, Nutwel had a great philosophy about life: "Some things you had control over, others you didn't". She knew when to let go. Family members remembered Mama Della as an inveterate reader who explored the world in the pages of her books. She never traveled more than 50 miles from home, visiting Washington only twice: once to see the zoo, and once to take in the cherry blossoms.
She was curious about the world around her but preferred the view from the sidelines. She voted only once in her life, telling a reporter that she "got disgusted and never voted again".
In her later years, as she became bedridden, virtually blind and hard of hearing, the family rallied. The men spent nights at the farmhouse, the women organized their lives around her daily care. They thought it would always be that way. According to her family, Nutwell said she was going to live to be 114.
Julia Nutwell died on 25 September 1998 at the age of 112 years, 57 days.
