Julijana Zakrajsek [Slovene: Zakrajšek] (28 October 1912 - 22 July 2024) was a Slovenian supercentenarian who was the oldest known living person in Slovenia. Her age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She is the oldest validated person from Slovenia
Biography[]
Julijana Zakrajsek was born in the village Opalkovo, Velike Lasce, Lower Carniola, Austria-Hungary (now Slovenia) on 28 October 1912. Her mother lived to be 89. She had eight siblings: four sisters and four brothers.
Before the Second World War, she had a boyfriend, who was recruited at the beginning of the war and never returned. She never married nor had children.
She trained as a knitter and moved to Ljubljana, where worked in mostly private companies for 40 years until her retirement in 1970.
After retiring, she moved to her sister's home in Opalkovo. Around 2011, she moved to her niece's home in Podulaka. Since her niece died, she has been living alone, but is often visited and helped by her great-niece and other relatives.
She became the oldest known living person in Slovenia, following the death of 109-year-old Matilda Serec on 7 March 2019.
In October 2022, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
On 1 September 2023, she surpassed the age of Katarina Marinic (1899–2010) of 110 years, 307 days and became a candidate for the title of the oldest person who ever lived in Slovenia. However, her age has not yet been verified by an international longevity research body such as the Gerontology Research Group (GRG), therefore Katarina Marinic is still considered the oldest validated person from Slovenia ever.
At the age of 111, she was still able to walk without help.
Julijana Zakrajsek died on 22 July 2024 in the village Podulaka, Velike Lasce, Lower Carniola, Slovenia at the age of 111 years, 268 days.
