Francelina Xavier Pereira (6 August 1915-3 December 2022), most known as "Jupira Brasil" was a Brazilian centenarian, singer, dancer, actress, producer, and model.

Biography[]

She was born in Rio de Janeiro City, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil on 16 August 1915, the daughter of Natalia Xavier Pereira.

Career[]

She was the leader of "Jupira & suas cabrochas", a Brazilian female vocal group that was very successful in the 40's and 50's, especially at carnivals in Rio de Janeiro and on the stages of the Teatro de Revista Brasileira.

On the stages of Cassino da Urca, where she shone as a star, she was one of the first actresses to personify a Bahian woman, long before her friend Carmen Miranda. Carmen, in 1940, wanted to take Jupira to the United States, but she refused the invitation.

She and her group began working with Herivelto Martins (along with the original Trio de Ouro lineup), and worked with Orson Welles, in 1942, when he came to Brazil to perform It's All True (1942), which remained unfinished. The group also worked many times with producer Carlos Machado, even taking part in three international tours with him.

She and her group, acted in some films as Garotas e Samba (1957), E de Chua (1958) and Mulheres a Vista (1959).

Personal life[]

She had one son: Altamir who died on 10 June 2013 at the age of 80. Her cousin was the broadcaster Manoel Barcelos.

Lived with her friend and caregiver Luzia Mendes in Rio de Janeiro City, Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil
