Centenarian

Justin Tuveri (born Giustino Tuveri; 13 May 1898 – 5 October 2007) was an Italian-born French centenarian who was one of the last surviving Italian veterans of the First World War. He was also a French citizen at the time of his death.

Biography[]

Justin Tuveri was born as Giustino Tuveri in Collinas, South Sardinia, Sardinia, Italy, on 13 May 1898.

On 24 August 1917, Tuveri was incorporated into the 45th Infantry Regiment in Ozieri, Sardinia. His military training was brief: it lasted about two weeks. On 23 November 1917, he was enrolled in the 152nd Infantry Regiment, part of the Sassari Brigade with the 151st.

Wounded in January 1918, Tuveri was no longer used in combat and was discharged in 1919.

In 1920, with the advent of fascism, Tuveri moved to Saint-Tropez, France. He then acquired French citizenship in 1940, later changing his name to Justin.

The Italian defense minister, Arturo Parisi, paid homage to Tuveri by saying: "We honor his youth and his life, and, at the same time, we express once again our gratitude for the courage of the Sardinians who, in the ranks of the Sassari Brigade, they fought in the Great War in the name of Italy." For this, in 2001, he received the Medal of the Order of the Knights of Vittorio Veneto.

Tuveri died in Saint-Tropez, Var, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur, France, on 5 October 2007, at the age of 109 years, 145 days.
