Biography[]

Early Life[]

Justine Cognon was born as Justine Bordelais in Papin, Les Abymes, Guadeloupe, France on 14 April 1911. She had six siblings (all deceased as of 2019). Her parents were farmers.

Cognon married Celestin Cognon, after what she was surnamed "Man Tintin". They lived in Bazin (Les Abymes) and had eight children: three boys, and five girls (who later gave them 21 grandchildren, and about 10 great-grandchildren). With her husband, she was a farmer: they harvested sugar cane, and tied it. They also liked to go at dances.

Cognon never beat her children, but was firm and knew how to be obeyed. Her children describe her as a loving mother, and her grandson Gilles Cognon says that one word which fits her is "love".

Later Life[]

Cognon was widowed in 1996. Since 2014, she lives in her daughter Marga's house. In October 2016, Cognon was one of fifteen centenarians who were invited to an event which honoured the centenarians, organized for the first time in the occasion of the "Semaine Bleue" (Blue Week).

Cognon celebrated her 110th birthday with her family in April 2021. At the time, she used sewing, singing, and looking the flowers in her garden. Her oldest daughter, Germaine, was aged 82.

Justine Cognon died in Boiripeaux, Les Abymes, Guadeloupe, France on 21 August 2022, at the age of 111 years, 129 days. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest known living person in Guadeloupe, after Juliana Sambin.
