Katharina Braun (née Schehlmann; 23 September 1867 – 5 February 1979) was a German supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of her death, she was the oldest known living person in Germany.
Biography
Braun was born in Kingdom of Bavaria (now Bavaria, Germany) on 23 September 1867.
She became the oldest known living person in Germany, following the death of 109-year-old Margarethe Sauer on 14 January 1977. In September 1977, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
On 25 January 1978, she surpassed the final age of Ella Ille Rentel and became the oldest German woman ever. On 19 April 1978, she surpassed the final age of Friedrich Wedeking and became the oldest German person ever.
Braun was the last known surviving person in Germany born before the foundation of the German Empire in 1871 Her German longevity record was broken by Paula Baumgartner in 1992.
Braun died in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany on 5 February 1979 at age 111 years, 135 days. She was autopsied following her death in 1979.
