Katie Anderson (née Macleod; 11 October 1908 – 4 June 2017) was a British centenarian who was the oldest living woman in Scotland at the time of her death. She had been the oldest living woman in Scotland since the death of Mary McGee on 1 January 2016.
Biography[]
Katie Anderson was born in Berneray - an island in the Outer Hebrides - on 11 October 1908. During her childhood she was a neighbour of Gaelic poet Iain Archie MacAskill.
Anderson moved to Edinburgh in 1926 to train as a nurse but ended up working as a kitchen maid, at one time being employed by surgeon Sir Walter Mercer.
Anderson married George Anderson - who died of cancer aged 78 after over 50 years of marriage. She had two daughters, Rhoda and Betty.
Into her centenarian years, Anderson was a member of Murrayfield Parish Church. In 2010, she was interviewed for a Gaelic BBC documentary - Tilleadh Dhachaidh: Returning Home - about MacAskill, in which she shared her memories of the poet.
Anderson died on 4 June 2017 at the age of 108 years, 236 days. At the time of her death, she was the second-oldest living person in Scotland behind Alf Smith. Her successor as Scotland's oldest woman was then-108-year-old Flora Smith.
