Katsuyoshi Kitazawa [Japanese: 北澤 勝喜] (30 March 1914 – 19 January 2025) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). At the time of his death, he was the second-oldest known living man in Japan, behind Kiyotaka Mizuno.

Biography[]

Katsuyoshi Kitazawa was born in Shiozaki Village (now Shinonoi-shiozaki, Nagano City), Nagano Prefecture, Japan, on 30 March 1914.

He had no vision in his right eye since a very young age. Although this vision impairment did not affect his own life too much, it did exclude him from service during World War II.

Kitazawa had worked in several different sectors during his life. At age 14, he utilised his father's connections to get a job as a confectioner. Kitazawa eventually settled in Chikuma City, and worked in a factory producing airplane parts. In 1955, he opened his business, Kitazawa Shoten, where he made and sold confections such as sweets, drinks and snacks. He ran the business until about the age of 80.

In 1940, he married a woman from his hometown, and the couple had three children. After his wife passed away at 88, Kitazawa lived alone, with his second son and daughter-in-law helping him out if needed. Even at the age of 100, he remained active, serving as president of the senior citizens’ club and using day services at a local welfare facility twice a week.

Katsuyoshi Kitazawa died in Chikuma, Nagano Prefecture, Japan on 19 January 2025 at the age of 110 years, 295 days.
