Kikue Taira [Japanese: 平良菊枝] (26 April 1910 – 18 April 2024) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography

Kikue Taira was born in Yomitan Village, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan on 26 April 1910, as the third of four daughters. At some point, she got married and gave birth to six children (five sons and a daughter). While still living at her own home, she enjoyed cooking. She was good at knitting, and she would make woolen capes and other gifts for her children and grandchildren.

In April 2020, Taira celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.

Taira died from natural causes in Yomitan, Okinawa Prefecture, Japan, on 18 April 2024 at the age of 113 years, 358 days.

Recognition

In September 2020, Taira was reported as the seventh-oldest known living person in Okinawa Prefecture.

Taira's age was verified by Japan's MHLW, Yumi Yamamoto, and Waclaw Jan Kroczek, and validated by the GRG on 5 March 2023.

In September 2023, Taira was reported as the second-oldest known living person in Okinawa Prefecture, after Kame Uema.

At the time of Taira's death, she was the fifth-oldest known living person in Japan, after Tomiko Itooka, Okagi Hayashi, Masa Matsumoto, and Ina Okazawa.

Oldest Siblings

Taira was the younger sister of Kame Ganeko (10 April 1905 – 18 October 2019) who lived to the age of 114 years, 191 days. Together, they are the oldest known pair of siblings in history with a combined age of over 228 years.

She and Kame Ganeko are the second ever known supercentenarian sister pair and they are also the first known siblings to both reach the age of 112+.
