Kohachi Shigetaka [Japanese: 重高小八] (10 May 1895 – 3 July 2005) was a Japanese supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). He was Japan's oldest living man from the death of Totaro Murakami on 30 July 2004 until his own death on 3 July 2005.
Biography
Kohachi Shigetaka was born in Kawagen, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan on 10 May 1895. He used to watch samurai dramas at television. He liked eating sashimis and eels.
Since 2003, Shigetaka was hospitalised. He spent his final days in his bed.
Kohachi Shigetaka died of pneumonia in Kawagen, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan on 3 July 2005, at the age of 110 years, 54 days. Following his death, then-110-year-old Nijiro Tokuda became the oldest living man in Japan.
Longevity Records
Following the death of 108-year-old Yoshio Shimizu on 13 May 2002, Shigetaka became the oldest living man in Hiroshima Prefecture. Following the death of 109-year-old Totaro Murakami on 30 July 2004, he became the oldest living man in Japan.
In May 2005, at the time he celebrated his 110th birthday, Shigetaka became Japan's first living male supercentenarian since Yukichi Chuganji, who died over one and a half years before Shigetaka reached supercentenarian status.
