Lajosne Kovassy (née Eszter Kando) [Hungarian: Kovássy Lajosné Kandó Eszter] (2 May 1811 – 25 October 1917) was a Hungarian centenarian who was the oldest known living person in Hungary, and Europe at the time of her death. She was also the oldest Hungarian person ever until 11 August 1972, when her age was surpassed by Alajosné Duronelly (1866–1974).
Biography[]
Lajosné Kovássy was born as Eszter Kandó in Egerlövő, Heves County, Austria-Hungary (now Hungary), on 2 May 1811, the seventh of eight children of Ferenc Kandó de Egerfarmos (1763–1826) and Eszter Pásztor de Gelej (1775–1852). She was baptized on 4 May 1811. One of her brothers, József Kandó (1797–1884) was a well-known lawyer in Budapest, and the grandfather of Kálmán Kandó.
She married Lajos Kovássy (1804–1888), who also hailed from a rich aristocratic family. They had two sons: Ferenc (1844–1927) and Kálmán (1847–1928). The couple lived in their mansions in Egerfarmos.
After her husband's death, she lived with the families of her sons. In her 90s, she almost died due to pneumonia, but she could recover. At the time of her 100th birthday in 1911, she was in very good health overall, but she had problems with her vision and hearing and used a cane for walking.
Lajosné Kovássy died in Tiszaigar, Jász–Nagykun–Szolnok County, Hungary, on 25 October 1917, at the age of 106 years, 176 days. She held the title of the oldest person ever to have lived in Hungary until 11 August 1972, when her age was surpassed by Alajosné Duronelly (1866–1974).
