Laurence "Laurie" Reynolds (1 April 1915 – 17 May 2022) was a New Zealand centenarian who was the oldest known living man in New Zealand at the time of his death.
Biography[]
Reynolds was born in Auckland, New Zealand on 5 April 1915.
In 1938, Reynolds graduated from the University of Otago with a medical graduate degree. Soon after he graduated college, Reynolds moved to London in 1939 to join the Royal Army Medical Corps. He would come to serve in many various countries for the entire duration of the II World War. After the war Reynolds returned back to Auckland, New Zealand where he met his future wife Claire Reynolds (née van Staveren). The couple married in 1946 and had four children. Reynolds would go on to become physician, as well as cardiologist.
In the 1960s he established the Coronary Care Unit at Auckland YMCA. He was involved in numerous professional organizations and eventually became Chairman of the Combined Medical Staffs of the Auckland Hospital Board. He eventually retired from his works to live out the rest of his days with his wife together. “Laurie" and his wife Claire lived independently in New Zealand for seventy-four years until 2019.
As of his 105th birthday in 2020, Reynolds and his wife Claire had six grandchilden, and four great-grandchildren. In April 2021, he celebrated his 106th birthday.
He became the oldest known living man in New Zealand, following the death of 108-year-old Bill Mitchell on 8 November 2021.
Reynolds died from heart failure in Auckland, North Island, New Zealand on 17 May 2022 at the age of 107 years, 46 days.
