Lazarie Marie Maes (24 July 1910 – 25 March 2021), known as Sister Genoveva; was a Belgian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Maes was born in Ettelgem, Oudenburg Municipality, West Flanders, Belgium, on 24 July 1910. Her parents were Arthur Maes and Elisa Vanthuyne. At the age of 18, she entered into religious life at the monastery in Heist-aan-Zee. Three years later, in 1931, she adopted the religious name Genoveva. She became a nursery school teacher and started working in Bruges in 1938. Subsequently she worked in kindergartens in Oostduinkerke (during the Second World War) and in Veldegem.
In 1998, she returned to the monastery of Heist where she entered into religious life. In 2009, at the age of 98, she moved to a local nursing home.
Maes died in Knokke-Heist, West Flanders, Belgium on 25 March 2021, at the age of 110 years, 244 days.
