Leila Bertha Shull (née Backman; 16 October 1894 – 22 December 2007) was an American supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Leila Bertha Backman was born in Lexington County, South Carolina, USA, on 16 October 1894, the daughter of William and Julie (Shumpert) Backman. She was married to Lee Shull for 45 years before he died in 1960. The couple had four children.
Shull was a member of St. David Lutheran Church for 75 years. She was an avid gardener who liked raising flowers, and also enjoyed cooking.
In her later life, Shull's hearing and vision began to fail. On her 113th birthday, she was quoted as saying "I think God has forgotten about me".
Leila Shull died in Lexington County, South Carolina, USA, on 22 December 2007 at the age of 113 years, 67 days. At the time of her death, she had 15 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and 40 great-great-grandchildren.
