Leo "Moritz" Ginovker [Russian: Лео Гиновкер] (27 August 1914 – 8 May 2020) was an Estonian centenarian who was the oldest (known) living man in Estonia since the death of Arved Tamm on 14 November 2017 and oldest (known) living Estonian born man since the death of Leo Praks on 19 October 2018.
Biography[]
Leo Ginovker was born in Tallinn, Harjumaa, Governorate of Estonia, Russian Empire on 27 August 1914. His parents were Joseph Ginovker and Haya (née Vyshedskaia) Ginovker.
In 1920, he went to the first grade of the Tallinn Jewish Primary School. When he graduated from high school in 1931, he spoke Estonian, Russian, English, German, Yiddish and Hebrew.
In the 1930s, he started working at the chocolate and biscuit factory "Ginovker & Co" of his father. In connection with his work, Leo had to travel around the world. He repeatedly visited London, but made the longest trip to Palestine in 1935.
On 14 June 1941, his family was deported to Siberia. He returned to Estonia in 1957. In 1991, he learned from the archives that his mother had been executed on 18 November 1941, during the Second World War. His father died in 1944.
He married Irena (née Klas) Beilinson in 1948. He got widowed in 1980. He married Stella Pustonskaja in 1981. He later found a job at Saue EPT, where he remained in office until he was 80 years.
On 27 August 2014, he turned 100.
Leo Ginovker died in Tallinn, Harjumaa, Estonia on 8 May 2020 at the age of 105 years, 255 days.
