Leonila Gvajava [Georgian: ლეონილა გვაჯავა] (5 May 1910 – 9 October 2021) was a Georgian supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). If her age is true, she would be the oldest living person in Georgia at the time of her death.

Biography[]

Leonila Gvajava was born in Abkhazia, Russian Empire (present-day Abkhazia, Georgia) on 5 May 1910. She had two children (including Guram Kvartskhava). She worked as a geography teacher before retirement.

In October 2019, at the age of 109, she was reunited with her former students.

She lived with her 80-year-old son, Guram Kvartskhava, in the Isani-Samgori District, Tbilisi, Georgia.

COVID-19 Survival[]

In August 2021, at the age of 111, Gvajava contracted COVID-19 during the coronavirus pandemic. However, she had recovered on 6 September 2021, making her one of the oldest known survivors of the disease. Her son, Guram Kvartskhava, also contracted COVID-19 at the age of 80.

Leonila Gvajava died of undisclosed causes in Tbilisi, Georgia on 9 October 2021 at the age of 111 years, 157 days. At the time of her death, she had seven grandchildren (including her granddaughter Lali Sichinava), 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
