Liao Caiai [Traditional Chinese: 廖蔡愛] (14 August 1913 – fl.11 October 2023) was a Taiwanese supercentenarian whose age is currently unvalidated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).

Biography[]

Liao Caiai was born on 14 August 1913 (marked on her ID card as the 2nd year of Republic of China) in Empire of Japan (now Taiwan). As an adult, she cultivated cereals and rice in fields with her husband, who died in 1996. She raised 5 sons and 2 daughters (the oldest being aged 86 in 2022). She also took part in some of her grandchildren’s education. Her descendants live in Taipei, Taichung, Yunlin and Tainan. In May 2019, she was living with four generations in her house.

In her centenarian years, Liao broke her leg and was hospitalised for about a month, after which she recovered. She was still able to walk with a walker at the age of 109. However, by October 2023, she had to use a wheelchair because of lower limb degenerescence.

For several years, Liao was visited by Yunlin County magistrat for Double Ninth Festival (Lee Chin-yung in 2016, and Chang Li-shan in 2018 and from 2020 to 2023). She was also honoured for Mother’s Day in 2019, 2020 and 2023.

In September 2022, Liao was reported as the oldest living person in Yunlin County; her predecessor, claimed-110-year-old Jiang Xinwang, went to limbo. At the time, she was hard of hearing, but still had a clear mind and sense of humour, and spoke without difficulties. She claimed the secret of her longevity is drinking milk and essence of chicken, eating three meals a day favouring small quantities, and doing two walks a day.

Liao Caiai was last confirmed alive on 11 October 2023 in Yingzhong Village, Huwei Township, Yunlin, Taiwan, at the age of 110 years, 58 days. In October 2024, she went to limbo, as the oldest living person in Yunlin County was reported to be a 106-year-old woman.
