Lilian Margaret Ward (10 November 1909 – 6 February 2020) was a British supercentenarian whose age was validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG) in 2020.
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Lilian Ward was born in Kilburn, London, England, on 10 November 1909, and went to school in Willesden Green and Windsor. Her two sisters would live to the ages of 103 and 96. For many years, she worked as a secretary for Shell. In 1940, she married John Ward, whom she met through the Catholic church they attended.
During World War II, the Wards moved to Exeter, Devon, England, where John found work as a linen buyer for a department store. They later ran their own mini-department store in Gillingham, Dorset, England, where their four children (all sons) were raised. They later downsized to a store in Bournemouth, Dorset, and lived there until John's death in 1967.
Later Life[]
After retiring in 1973, Ward moved to Stone, Staffordshire, England, to live near her son Michael. She lived there for the rest of her life. She attended fitness classes until she was 90, and continued to drive until she was 103.
At the age of 107, Ward was reported to be in remarkably good health for her age, still living on her own. In 2018, she declined to move in to a care home after a trial run and lived at home, with the help of carers. She celebrated her 110th birthday in November 2019, becoming a supercentenarian.
Ward died in Stone, Staffordshire, England on 6 February 2020 at the age of 110 years, 88 days, as a result of a large gallstone that proved to be inoperable. At the time of her death, she had four children, nine grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
