Lim Beak (1908 – fl.23 October 2015) was a Chinese-born Singaporean centenarian.
Biography[]
Lim was born in Fujian, China in 1908. She moved to Singapore to join her husband who had fled China to avoid military conscription. Lim worked on her husband's farm in Jalan Ulu Sembawang, growing vegetables such as bittergourd, tapioca and brinjal, until she was in her 70s.
The family managed to save enough to buy pigs and started rearing them until the Government phased out pig farming across Singapore. They then moved into their public housing flat in Yishun.
Lim and her husband had 10 children - five sons and five daughters. When her husband died in 2001, she moved in with her second son's family.
Not wanting to burden her descendants, she decided to live alone in a one-room flat in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4 after her second son and daughter-in-law died in 2005. There, she collected old cardboard and newspapers to sell "because [she] got bored sitting alone at home", earning her $20 to $30 a month for "a little more pocket money". Her utilities bills were paid for by a grandson. As of 2015, she kept herself active by taking care of daily chores at home, cooking porridge for her lunch and dinner, and venturing downstairs to the Thye Hua Kwan Senior Activities Centre for exercise and companionship.
It is not known when/if Lim Beak had passed away.
