Biography

Early Life

Lin Zhaozhi claimed to have been born in Hualien City, Hualien County, Empire of Japan (now Taiwan) on 17 January 1900 (12 years before the Republic of China; however, some articles seems to support an earlier date). As a young adult, she worked as a helper, and took care of the two daughters of a family.

Lin married Chen Jinchi [Traditional Chinese: 陳金池] and had four children: a daughter (aged 90 as of 2013), a first son (deceased as of 2013), a second son Fan Yinwang [Traditional Chinese: 范銀旺] (aged 73 in 2013), and a third son Chen Yonghui [Traditional Chinese: 陳勇輝].

When her son Chen Yonghui was a teenager, Lin was widowed. She raised her four children alone by growing vegetables and doing the cleaning.

Later Life

Lin used to go alone in train to Luodong in her 70s. Until her 80s, she used to drink black beans wine (black beans macerated in rice wine during three or four months) every evening before going to bed. When she was old, she ate light meals, especially with vegetables, steamed eggs and tofu. At age 100, she was still eating rice to train her mastication.

Lin lived for years in Hualien County. She regularly moved between her son Chen Yonghui's house, in New Taipei City, and Hualien County.

In 2010, Lin was reported to be in good health, aside of a deteriorating eyesight. In 2011, she was able to walk without crutches. Some time after 2011, she became wheelchair-bound, but was still doing some gymnastics. She definitively stayed in New Taipei City.

In September 2012, Lin was hospitalized in New Taipei City hospital because of a cold, and was discharged in October 2012. However, she was in bad physical health, and unable to walk and talk. Her son Chen Yonghui and his wife took care of her. At hospital, she was visited by the mayor of Sanchong District, Yang Yide [Traditional Chinese: 楊義德], who offered her a blanket and powdered milk. However, Lin was unable to receive the pension of Double Ninth Festival from New Taipei City, because she was still registered in Hualien City.

Lin Zhaozhi died in Sanchong District, New Taipei City, Taiwan on 11 December 2013 at the claimed age of 113 years, 328 days. Following her death, then 113-year-old Liu Jinghuan became the oldest known living person in Taiwan.

Potential Longevity Records

If validated, she would have been the seventh-oldest living person in the world, after Misao Okawa, Gertrude Weaver, Jeralean Talley, Susannah Mushatt Jones, Bernice Madigan and Emma Morano. She would also have been the second-oldest known living person in Asia, after Misao Okawa at the time of her death.
