Linda Florence Hastings Yale (née Smith; 28 December 1912 – 11 March 2024) was a Canadian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG).
Biography[]
Early Life[]
Linda Yale was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on 28 December 1912.
When she was young, Yale took part in various sports, such as cross-country skiing, where she was the only female skier on her team. In the 1930s, Yale was known for being the only female fencer in Montreal, and competing against the men.
Later Life[]
In 1969, Yale moved to Richmond, British Columbia, after her husband's employer transferred him. She worked as an accountant until her retirement in 1979. She has spent a large chunk of her free time recycling stamps for charity, on behalf of the Eastern Star.
As of December 2016, Yale had two children, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. She was also still able to play cribbage twice a week.
In December 2022, she celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian. She attributed her longevity to keeping busy throughout her life and having an occasional glass of wine.
She became the oldest known living person in British Columbia, following the death of 113-year-old Mabel Mah on 30 January 2024.
Linda Yale died in a retirement home in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada on 11 March 2024 at the age of 111 years, 74 days.
