After completing elementary school, she boarded with a family to attend high school in a neighbouring town before moving to Detroit at the age of 17, where she worked for General Motors.

Arbanas met her future husband, Joseph Arbanas, at a church social, and the couple married in 1934. They subsequently moved to Washington, D.C. for six years, before he was transferred to Chicago, Illinois. Lois became a homemaker and volunteered in the local community. The couple had two children, Anne, and Marybeth.

The family moved Wilmette, Illinois, in 1955 and remained there until Joseph retired in 1968. They then moved to Rancho Bernardo, California, to spend their retirement. After Joseph became ill, they returned to Illinois and moved to a retirement community. Joseph died in 1992.

Arbanas lived in the same retirement community in Arlington Heights, Illinois, for the rest of her life after her husband's death. At the age of 108, she voted in the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
