Lola Ellen de la Haye (née Jones; 2 November 1909 – 9 July 2019) was a New Zealand centenarian who was the oldest known living person in New Zealand at the time of her death.
Biography[]
Lola de la Haye was born Lola Ellen Jones in Masterton, New Zealand on 2 November 1909. She married John de la Haye on 28 June 1933. They were together for more than 40 years until John's death. They had two daughters: Jennifer Wolfe and Jillian. The couple farmed in Merrilands, where a reserve is now named after John. Not long before the de la Hayes' 40th wedding anniversary, John had a stroke. She cared for him at home for nearly eight years until his death in 1979.
Lola de la Haye received media attention when she claimed to be New Zealand's oldest driver at the age of 101, and again when she gambled on the Melbourne Cup at the age of 106. She stopped driving at the age of 101. Soon after that, she moved into the Molly Ryan retirement village, which sit on the land she and John once owned. She became the oldest living person in New Zealand following the death of Mabel Jenkins on 7 July 2019.
Lola de la Haye died in New Zealand on 9 July 2019 at the age of 109 years, 249 days. For the last two days of her life, she held the title of the oldest living person in New Zealand. At the time of her death, she had 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
