Biography[]
Burkhalter was born as Etta Louise Jones in Hillsborough County, Florida, USA on 13 November 1912 to John and Sarah Jones. She grew up in Tampa, Florida. Her older brother served during the First World War.
She married Carl Burkhalter on 16 December 1929 when she was 17 years old. They moved from Tampa, where she grew up, to Harrison, Michigan. During the Great Depression, they built a house on a farm and they raised their three daughters. Carl died in March 1992 after 62 years of marriage.
Burkhalter was an avid fan of golf, and she was able to take part in the sport until she was 96 years old, when she had started to lose her balance.
As of 2020, Burkhalter was still very lucid, and all three of her daughters were still alive (the eldest of which was aged 84 at the time).
In November 2022, Burkhalter celebrated her 110th birthday and became a supercentenarian.
Burkhalter currently lives with one of her daughters, Mary, in a condo in Grand Rapids, Michigan, USA, at the age of 113 years, 85 days. She is currently the second-oldest known living person in the U.S. state of Michigan, behind Bonita Gibson.
