Biography[]
Louise Signore was born as the oldest of five siblings to Italian immigrant parents Mary (née D'Angelo) and Theodore Signore in Harlem, a neighbourhood of the New York City borough of Manhattan, on 31 July 1912. At the age of 12, she moved to the Bronx, also a borough of New York City. Her mother lived to 97 and her younger brother Frank lived to 94.
Signore never married nor had children; the love of her life was killed overseas during WWII. She worked as an administrative assistant for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), a public benefit corporation responsible for public transportation in the New York City metropolitan area. She retired from her job in 1977, at the age of 65.
On 2 April 2016, at the age of 103, after she returned from her daily dancing and exercising session at the Bartow Community Center, Signore was mugged in her apartment building in the Bronx, though she managed to survive. Her attacker knocked her to the ground and stole $35, two meals, a magnifying glass, a pack of bingo cards, and a photo of her older brother.
Signore attributes her longevity to never getting married and staying single her entire life, as well as having good home food and lots of fruits and vegetables. As of July 2019, she had a younger sister who was still alive at the age of 102 (her sister was named Katherine or Rene Caroli and may have died in February 2020).
On 21 February 2021, at the age of 108, Signore received the COVID-19 vaccine, making her one of the oldest known people to receive the vaccine.
In June 2022, at the age of 109, Signore underwent surgery to have her hip surgically repaired after she had suffered a fall in her bedroom.
On 31 July 2022, Signore turned 110 years old, becoming a supercentenarian. At the age of 111, she remains active and is still able to walk with the help of a walker.
Signore's age was verified by Waclaw Jan Kroczek and Oliver Trim, and validated by the GRG on 6 July 2023.
Louise Signore currently lives in the Bronx at the age of 112 years, 38 days. She is currently the second-oldest known living person in the U.S. state of New York, after Rose Girone.
