Lucia Laura "Laurina" Sangenito-Abbondandolo (born 22 November 1910) is an Italian supercentenarian whose age is validated by the Gerontology Research Group (GRG). She is currently the oldest known living person in Italy.

Biography[]

Lucia Laura Sangenito was born in Sturno, Campania, Italy on 22 November 1910. Her mother lived to be 101 years old.

From a young age she worked in the fields and served as a midwife for the children of Sturno. She married Pasquale Abbondandolo, a farmer, on 2 February 1939. The couple had four children, the first two of whom died after birth. In 2024, the third son Michele, was 82 years old, is married and has two children and three grandchildren. He resides in Naples. The youngest daughter, Maria, who was a middle school teacher of Italian literature, aged 78, lives with her mother in Sturno.

In the Italian institutional referendum in 1946, Laurina voted for the republic.

In 1962, due to the earthquake in Irpinia, she lost her house, but rebuilt a new one a few meters away. She has lived here since 1970.

Laurina's husband died on 28 September 2010 at the age of 98.

At the age of 107, she underwent surgery for a fracture caused by a domestic accident. In November 2020, she celebrated her 110th birthday. Even as a supercentenarian, she remains lucid and prays regularly. At the age of 112, she underwent six months of chemotherapy for nose cancer. After completing the treatment, she recovered from the disease.

Her age was verified by Mr. Alfredo Nocera, GRG Correspondent for Italy, and validated by the GRG on 9 June 2023.

Sangenito currently lives with her daughter Maria Abbondandolo in Sturno, Campania, Italy, at the age of 114 years, 63 days. She is currently the oldest known living person in Campania.

Longevity Records[]

On December 23, 2018, with the death of Maria Mariconda, she became the oldest living person in Campania.

On 15 January 2022, she surpassed the final age of Teresa Ruberto (1896–2007) to become the oldest person ever to live in the Campania region, and on 12 August 2024, at the age of 113 years, 264 days, she surpassed the final age of Amalia Barone (1884–1998), becoming the oldest person ever born in the region.

Since the death of 114-year-old Silveria Martin Diaz of Spain on 11 September 2024, she has been in the the top ten oldest validated living people in the world. Since the death of Claudia Baccarini on 24 December 2024, she has been the oldest known living person in Italy.
